Area students in grades 4 through 12 are invited to audition for the Bryan College Community Children’s Choir (grades 4-8) or Youth Choir (grades 9-12) for the coming year. The auditions will take place Thursday, Aug. 29, at 4 p.m. in the chorale room of Bryan’s Rudd Auditorium in Dayton. Students selected through the audition process will practice weekly and perform at a number of events throughout the 2013-2014 year.
New directors for Bryan’s choirs are Jane Barnett for the Children’s Choir and Randy Bright for the Youth Choir. Former Director for the Bryan College Community Music School, Barnett, has taught piano at all levels for more than 30 years, was a member of Chattanooga Choral Arts, has directed many choirs and always been involved in choral music, either as a singer, director or accompanist. Bright, who will graduate in December 2013 with a degree in vocal music education, is teaching voice lessons and has performed in several major works on campus including Street Scene, Cosi fan tutte and Cinderella.
The Children’s Choir will rehearse on Mondays from 4:15 to 5 p.m. Choir members work on sight reading skills, vocal production, blend, balance and learning and memorizing music for concerts. Their repertoire includes classical, spiritual and traditional sacred music.
The Youth Choir will learn music in a variety of styles, developing musicianship in the context of ensemble performance. They rehearse Wednesdays from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
Both choirs have a $25 per semester fee and the Youth Choir has a one-time uniform fee. Practices will be held in the chorale suite, room 109, on the lower level of Rudd Auditorium.
