Rhea County Volunteers in Medicine Clinic — The Rhea County Volunteers In Medicine (VIM) Clinic is a free medical clinic for the uninsured residents of Rhea County. Blood Donors Needed — Blood Assurance is in urgent need for blood donors, especially those with blood type O Negative. Rhea Countians are encouraged to attend one of the upcoming blood drives in Dayton. The Blood Assurance Blood Mobile will be at FB Bank on Tuesday, July 2, from 1:45 to 5:25 p.m. and at Wal-Mart on Monday, July 8, from noon to 5:30 p.m.
Rhea County Academy Summer Camp (6/3 - 7/22) — Rhea County Academy will host an eight-week summer camp from June 3 through July 22. Walden’s Ridge Benefit Turkey/Ham Shoot (6/29) — The Walden’s Ridge Community Center will hold a benefit Turkey/Ham Shoot at 8 a.m. on Saturday, June 29, at Ersie’s old store on the corner of Dayton Mountain Hwy/ Hwy 30 West and Morgan Springs Rd. Signs will be posted. Snacks will be available from the Kiuka Fire Dept.
Square Foot Gardening Presentations (6/29) — Dayton’s Girl Scouts will give presentations explaining square foot gardening. at Lowe’s on Saturday, June 29, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Under the direction of leader Luanna Carter, the Girl Scouts have assembled two four-foot square gardens planned and prepared with the guidance of the book “All New Square Foot Gardening” by Mel Bartholomew. The Master Gardeners of Rhea County and Rhea County 4-H members are also working on the project garden. This is a method that produces much more produce per square foot and is much easier for spring, summer and fall crop harvests than conventional row gardening and requires much less tilling and fertilizer. The garden will also be on display in the Lowe’s parking lot on Saturday.
Rhea County Veterans Coordinating Committee Meeting (7/2) — The Rhea County Veterans Coordinating Committee will hold their regularly scheduled business meeting on Tuesday, July 2, at 7 p.m. at McClendon-Garrison American Legion Post 203, located at 179 W. Jackson Avenue in Spring City. Planning and preparation for Veterans Day activities will be discussed. All honorably discharged military veterans, family members and friends are invited to attend. There are no dues associated with this organization.
Puckett/Beene/Headlee & Friends Get-Together (7/4) — A get-together for the Puckett/Beene/Headlee families and friends will be held Thursday, July 4, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Walden’s Ridge Community Center on Dayton Mountain Highway (Hwy. 30 W). Spring City Shake the Lake Independence Day Celebration (7/6) — Spring City will hold their annual “Shake the Lake” Independence Day celebration at Veteran’s Park on Saturday, July 6. The all-day event will start with registration for the Mr. & Miss Firecracker Pageant at 9 a.m. The pageant will include five age categories for boys and girls from newborn to eight-years-old. The pageant will begin at 10 a.m. with the Baby Miss Firecracker category and will continue until the final Mister Firecracker category begins at 12:15 p.m. The afternoon’s events will begin with registration for the watermelon and pickle eating contests at noonwith the pickle eating contest beginning at 1 p.m. followed by the watermelon eating contest at 1:30 p.m. Karaoke will begin at 2 p.m. followed by sign-ups for the Diaper Derby, Teddy Bear Run and Duck Race at 3 p.m. The Diaper Derby will begin at 4 p.m. followed by the Teddy Bear Run at 4:15 p.m. and the Duck Race at 5 p.m. The events continue into the evening as live band music continues with Corey Rose and Evervigilant performing until dark when fireworks will light the night sky to conclude to festivities.
Fly-In, Drive-In Breakfast (7/27) — The Civil Air Patrol will host a breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Mark Anton Municipal Airport on Saturday, July27. The all-you-can-eat cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children under 10. The event will be held rain or shine.
