The Rhea County Commission voted to remove the current downtown jail site from consideration for jail expansion at a special-called meeting on Thursday.
After a motion by commission Grover Parks to move the jail out of the downtown area and construct a detention facility with the possibility of expanding it in the future, the commission voted unanimously to approve the move.
