Take heed to the ministry which thou hast received in the Lord,
that thou fulfill it. (Colossians 4:17).
"Be thou an example of the believers,"
Paul urged young Timothy (1 Timothy 4:12). Good examples are sometimes hard to find. In his letter
to believers at Colosse, the apostle names two whom we may safely follow. Hebrews 11 lists many
more.
Tychicus is a disciple of whom we know very little, except that he was a traveling
companion of Paul's in his missionary journeys and here called "a beloved brother" (4:7). This
designation reveals that he endeared himself to the apostle by his unselfish and unsung service. Not
a professional, Tychicus was what we might call today a volunteer. He is probably the messenger who
delivered this letter to the Colossian congregation. Little did he know then that it would become
part of the inspired revelation which would encourage Christians universally through the centuries.
His ordinary service produced extraordinary results. So may it be with you and me. God has
mysterious ways of multiplying the bread of life.
