Published: 3:57 PM, 02/01/2013

Author: Pat Guffey
Source: The Herald-News

At an earlier time, I shared a letter from William Gibbs Allen written to his wife, Mary Elizabeth Thomison Allen during the time of the Civil War.  Allen, was the son of Valentine Allen III and Ann Frazier Allen, and was part of Colonel George W. McKenzie’s 5th Tennessee Cavalry during the war.  In the following letter, written to his father and family, W. G. Allen describes some of the events which occurred during 1862.  William’s father, Valentine Allen III, was a member of Captain Darius Waterhouse’s Company, and his brothers Thomas A., George W., and Valentine C IV, were all three in Company I (Lillard’s) of the 3rd Tennessee.
