Nevertheless, wherein we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us mind the same thing. (Philippians 3:16)
“To every purpose, there is a time” (Ecclesiastes 8:6),
an ancient sage opined. The Apostle Paul may have had this in mind when
he wrote this letter to the church at Philippi. Terms such as “follow
after,” “press toward the mark,” and “walk by the same rule,” punctuate
the last half of Chapter Three. In contrast, Chapter Four opens with
“stand fast.”
The question arises, when is the time to press on and when is the time to stand fast? Some believers seem to stand fast when then should press on, and press on when they should stand fast.
