Two Rhea County motorists were killed in a wreck on Highway 60 in north Hamilton County Tuesday.
Joseph Ryan Jordan, 23, and Derrick Scott Dugger, 24, both of Dayton, were killed when their Mustang collided head-on with a truck traveling in the southbound lane that crossed the center line, according to Hamilton County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Janice Atkinson.
Jordan and Dugger's names were released by the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office on Wednesday following the notification of the next of kin.
The driver of the truck, who is a juvenile and whose name will not be released, was transported to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga with nonlife-threatening injuries, Atkinson said.
The accident report has not yet been released, officials with the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office said, as the investigation is still ongoing.
According to data from the Tennessee Department of Safety (TDS), this is the first fatal accident in Hamilton County in 2011.
A report with the TDS Office of Research, Statistics and Analysis, which keeps a record of the number of fatal accidents in the state since 1950, states that there were 740 fatalities in 1954, the lowest on record. The highest number of traffic fatalities occurred in 1973, according to the report, when there were 1,444 fatalities across the state.
