Despite the efforts of local emergency and rescue crews, a Spring City man died in a fiery wreck over the weekend.

Mark Anthony Smith Sr., 52, died Saturday after the Ford Ranger pickup truck he was driving collided head-on with a dump truck on Watts Bar Highway, according to Tennessee Highway Patrol Lt. Daniel Ruskey.

The driver of the dump truck was not seriously injured, and there were no other passengers, Ruskey said.

The trucks slammed into each other near Yellow Creek Road at about 3:30 p.m., Ruskey said.
Immediately after the wreck, Smith's pickup burst into flames, and rescue crews were unable to extract him before he passed away, the trooper said.

Smith was headed west on Watts Bar Highway toward Rhea County Highway, and the dump truck was headed east.

Ruskey said authorities don't know why Smith reportedly crossed the centerline and slammed into the dump truck. He said an eyewitness told officers of what happened when they got to the crash Saturday.

Ruskey said the crash will be under investigation until troopers receive Smith's blood toxicology reports from medical officials.

Smith's funeral was at noon Tuesday at Coulter Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton. He was buried in Bakewell, in northern Hamilton County.

This is the second automobile wreck that has led to a fatality in Rhea County this year and the third Rhea Countian to be killed in a car wreck this year.

A Rockwood, Tenn., man was killed in a wreck on Highway 27 north of Spring City in January.

Two Spring City residents were killed in a wreck in Hamilton County in February. That crash was blamed on icy road conditions.
