The Herald-News advertisers and subscribers should beware of a phone scam targeted at getting credit card information.
The scam has struck at least one Herald-News classified advertiser and several classified advertisers of the Herald's sister papers within the Jones Media family.
The customers reported they received phone calls where a party told them in order to complete an order for a classified ad, they would need to give their credit card information over the phone.
The Herald-News stresses that customers should always call The Herald-News office to verify that information is needed before offering it over the phone.
Also, scams targeting The Herald-News customers often state that The Dayton Herald needs credit card information, but The Herald-News has not gone by that name in nearly 30 years.
Also, scammers have been making these calls after business hours, but The Herald-News representatives only call advertising customers during normal business hours.
The Herald-News staff urges customers use wise judgment when asked to divulge any financial information over the phone.
