The Rhea County High School girls' basketball team came painstakingly close to its first District 5-AAA win in five seasons Tuesday night against Ooltewah High School.
The hometown girls (4-14) jumped ahead to a 13-6 lead in the first quarter and held a 24-13 advantage at the half. Unofrtunately for them, Ooltewah's Lady Owls took flight in the second half, winning the third 11-5 and the fourth 15-10 to send the game to overtime.
Rhea County looked to have won it when junior Mary Hickey sank two foul shots with 6.4 seconds left in regulation, putting the Lady Eagles up 42-39.
In the waning seconds, however, Ooltewah's Kianna Delaney stole the ball and drained a three-point shot at the buzzer to force overtime.
Foul shots again proved crucial in OT when, with the score tied at 46-all and 1.9 seconds left, Ooltewah's Ri Lawrence swished two in a row for the win.
"The kids are crushed. In our mind, we let a good oppononent slip away. We battled hard but have to be committed to correcting mental mistakes and careless turnovers. Of our 29 turnovers, well over half were unforced," said Lady Eagle Head Coach Shane Johnston. "I feel like we didn't give them our best punch."
Rhea County's girls were led in scoring in the effort by Sarah Nixon with 19 points, while Hickey tooped the field with 10 boards and five steals.
The Lady Eagles went on to lose to McMinn County High School on Thursday 51-38.
Meanwhile, the Golden Eagle boys' basketball team (7-11) also suffered two district losses this week, falling to Ooltewah 71-59 and McMinn County 56-47.
Branden Logsdon had 36 points over two games, while Tyler Wilkerson drained 31 for Rhea County.
The Eagles will return to action Monday night, hosting Hixson High School at 6 and 7:30 p.m.
