In a surprisingly bold first quarter Friday night, the Rhea County High School Golden Eagle basketball team (7-9, 1-7) outscored visiting Cleveland High School 18-17.
Though the District 5-AAA Raiders (15-3, 7-0) ended up with an 81-64 final victory, the score was close most of the game.
Rhea County trailed 35-32 at halftime, but a dip in performance in the third quarter put the hometown boys in a 60-46 deficit.
The Golden Eagles soared back into action, scoring 18 points in the final period, but had already fallen too far behind.
Andrew Facciani finished the night with 15 points, while Branden Logsdon followed with 11 points. Kenzie Goins drained 10 points, and Tyler Wilkerson had another double-double night with 10 points and 11 assists.
"I have never been prouder of our kids' effort or execution. We're still just a little behind Cleveland, but everyone who came to the game tonight saw a definite competitive spirit from the Eagles," Head Coach Tony Williams said.
Meanwhile, the Lady Eagles (4-12, 0-8) fell to Cleveland's girls 41-18, as well as picked up a 63-49 loss at Trousdale County on Saturday.
The Eagles are slated to visit McMinn County High School on Friday for 6 and 7:30 p.m. tipoffs.
