Rhea County High School's Lady Eagle wrestlers got a taste of action Saturday at the Soddy Daisy Showdown.
"This was the first real test for our girls team, and I'm pleased. We still have a few issues with a couple of minor details, but the past two months of practice has put our girls in better condition than their opponents," Head Coach Lincoln Head said.
At 130 pounds, Kacee Davis earned a first-place finish in the tournament for Rhea County. Davis had a bye to qualify to the finals, where she pinned Soddy Daisy's Michelle Towry in 4:26.
The Lady Eagles' remaining wrestlers went one-and-one at the tourney.
Rhea County's Kelly Wood (112 lbs.) pinned her Soddy Daisy Lady Trojan opponent in 3 minutes flat, before losing to defending state champion, McMinn County's Kelsie Hampton, by pin in 4:58.
"It should be noted that Kelly was up 8-4 when we 'cut' Kelsie - that is purposely letting a wrestler go so we can take her down again. When Kelly went for her fifth take down she got countered and injured her neck resulting in her pin," Head explained.
Wood ended up finishing second in her weight class.
Lady Eagle Kelia Jenkins (119 lbs.) pinned Kristin Cook from McMinn County in 2:35 before losing to Lady Trojan Hayley Moreno in 2:49 in the finale.
Hannah Travis fell to Soddy Daisy's Brook Hensley in 1:07 as well as returning state medalist Hannah Barry, from St. Andrew's-Sewanee, in 4:49.
The Lady Eagles' next match was scheduled for Tuesday at Stone Memorial, but results were not available at press time.
