Paper faces will be on parade for the 63rd annual Tennessee Strawberry Festival in 2010.
It was announced this week at a meeting of the Rhea Economic and Tourism Council that next year's festival theme will be "Strawberry Masquerade."
Mandy Cook, a teacher at Frazier Elementary School who helps coordinate the Junior Miss Program each year, suggested the theme.
"We were being selfish thinking how we could use the theme with Junior Miss," laughed Amy Smith, another Junior Miss coordinator.
Instead of taking a more formal approach to the masquerade theme, Smith said she would like to see a fun, Mardi Gras-style flair throughout the festival.
Strawberry Festival coordinator Randy Wells agreed, saying that the parade and Family Fun Night have the most potential to incorporate the flashy theme.
"We thought it left open a lot of opportunities to use the imagination," said Wells.
The 2010 Strawberry Festival is set to begin on May 1 with the Strawberry King/Queen Pageant and concluding with the parade day on May 15.
Wells said some of the possible revisions for next year may include altering how the charity auction, pie and cake contest and strawberry shortcake night are conducted. The rodeo may be subject to change as well, he said.
In order to mesh with the party theme, committee members are also discussing a new event for next year: A circus.
"We'll have to flesh all that out," Wells said.
The festival committee should be holding another meeting in August to chisel out more details about the festival.
The committee meets at the Dayton Chamber of Commerce.
