A Spring City man lost his home to fire on
Wednesday, according to Rhea County Emergency Management Director and Fire Chief Billy
Cranfield. Donald Tilley, of Glenn Lane, heard strange popping and cracking noises just before he
left to go to work at La-Z-boy on Wednesday afternoon around 2:45 p.m. "He said the lights
flickered too, but he didn't think anything about it because the lights flicker a lot around here,"
Cranfield explained after talking with Tilley. "Fire investigator Chuck Kinney and I had already
determined the origin of the fire before we talked to Tilley." According to Cranfield, the
clothes dryer started the fire. "The fire traveled up the wall and into the attic," Cranfield said. "The home was totally gutted. Tilley was only able to save a few personal items." The neighbor,
Mrs. Bennett, called 911 when she noticed the fire around 6 p.m. "We received the call at 6:02
p.m. and some firefighters had arrived on the scene by 6:05 p.m. The Wolf Creek Fire Department
responded by 6:10 p.m.," Cranfield continued. Pine Grove Fire Department and Spring City Unit 500
along with the Rhea County Sheriff's Department also responded to the fire. The home was insured
by Farm Bureau. To help, contact Kathleen Garrison with the Red Cross at 365-9048. Shelly
