Cleveland (8-3) at Rhea County (10-1)
Where: Rhea County High School
When: 7 p.m. (tickets are $8 each)
Last week: The Eagles trailed 24-21 at halftime but came back to defeat the Lenoir City Panthers 35-24, while the Cleveland Blue Raiders trounced White County 42-8 in round one of the playoffs.
Series History: The Eagles and Blue Raiders have met 34 times, with Cleveland owning the series 23-11. Prior to this season, the two teams were longtime District 5-AAA foes. A year ago, a 1-8 Eagles’ team went on the road for the season finale and beat the Blue Raiders 29-27, thus ruining their senior night, and the Rhea win essentially knocked Cleveland out of the playoffs.
It’s been said and theorized that in a rival game, records are thrown out the window. The theory proved true with the Eagles’ upset win in a heated rivalry that dates back to the 1970s.
CHS 2012 Record: The Blue Raiders posted a 5-5 record a year ago. They were initially in the playoffs on the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association [TSSAA] selection day, but due to an oversight that was caught by the TSSAA later in the day, Cleveland was no longer in the playoffs and Sullivan South High School was in.
