This people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honor me, but have removed their heart from me . . . (Isaiah 29:13)
The picture drawn here of the ancient nation of Israel is very much the picture of the entire human race. Worship has become an activity of the mouth and lips but does not involve the heart. It is external, not internal; of the body, but not the soul; of the flesh, but not the spirit.
This is the error of man-made religion. It is all outward and on the surface, bringing offering, making sacrifices, performing rituals, even saying prayers. The individual heart is not changed. The truth of God is like an unread book to one who cannot read [29:11].
