Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father. . . stablish you in every good word and work. (2 Thessalonians 2:16, 17)
There are certain conditions which must prevail before our Lord Jesus Christ returns. One of these is found in Matthew 24:14; another is here in today’s lesson text. “Be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, [...] as that the day of Christ is at hand [...] that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first [...]” (2:2, 3). The history from the first century to the present time has been a repetition of boom and bust, i.e., revival, spiritual decline, and renewal, the record of the book of Judges all over again. Inasmuch as Christ has not yet come, obviously the falling away referred to has not yet occurred.
