And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. (Acts 2:4)
The day of Pentecost was a one time occurrence. There is no indication of its ever being repeated. It was prophesied by Joel [Joel 2:28-32], promised by Jesus [John 14:16-18], and now possessed by the Church. Note that “they were all filled with the Holy Ghost.’ The filling should not be understood as a separate individual experience, denoting some individuals as being more deeply ‘spiritual’ than the common run [1 Cor. 12:13]. Its purpose was to empower the corporate Body of Christ for the carrying out of the great commission. This is the Church’s supreme task.
