On Jan. 30, Birchwood Baptist Church held its fifth annual AWANA Grand Prix. A crowd of clubbers, their families and their friends gathered in the Birchwood Elementary School Gymnasium to watch the participants race their cars down the track.
Registration and weigh-in began at 5:45 p.m. Judging for the top design began at 6:30 p.m. while a few church members shared their testimonies with the participants and their families. Pastor David Delmotte shared the plan of salvation then closed with prayer.
The clubbers who did not design a car raced their matchbox cars down the track with everyone coming away with a brand new matchbox car to keep as their very own.
Finally, the main event arrived and everyone sat on the edge of their seats with anticipation. Dakota Hooker, the MC for the night, announced the first heat of participants and the racers were off. Every car raced against two or three other cars.
First place for speed went to Braylee Hart; second place went to Wyatt Webb; third place went to Chandler Erwin and fourth place went to Graham Delmotte.
For top design, first place went to Christian Colbaugh; second place went to Mitchell Delmotte; third place went to Maletha Sanders and fourth place went to Ayden Neely and Ruben Rios who tied.
In the leaders division, Alice Moon won first place for speed and Jessica Tameler won first place for design.
