An oil drilling rig was set up by Richard C. Knight in 1900 on his property that is now located near what is now Daytonā€™s Mark Anton Airport.

As I have been "sifting"¯ through the papers of the late Bettye Broyles, I have come across many items of interest which people had submitted to her for a new book, or for the files of the Historical Society. One of those tidbits of substance was a picture showing the drilling for oil around 1900 on the Richard C. Knight farm.
According to information from Virginia Knight Nelson, one of our Historical Society's lifetime members, and the great granddaughter of Richard C. Knight, rights were acquired to drill and operate oil and gas wells in Rhea County. However, she states that the wells were not successful financially during this time of the late 1880's to early 1900's.
