Dr. Edward Downey Johnson, 78, of Chattanooga, Tenn., passed away Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013, at Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga. He was born Nov. 28, 1934, in Savannah, Ga., to Virgil D. and Daisy L. Drinnon Johnson. He attended grammar and high schools in Savannah, earned an undergraduate degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology before attending the University of Pennsylvania where he earned an M.D. in 1961. He completed a surgical residency at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Ga. and worked in Atlanta for 20 years before moving his family to Sale Creek, Tenn. in 1981, where he opened his own clinic to serve that area. In 2002, he opened Specialty Medical in Dayton, Tenn., specializing in treating patients with back problems. He retired in 2011. Dr. Johnson was known to his colleagues, patients and area residents as a compassionate, caring physician and friend.
Survivors include his wife Terry Beltramo Johnson of Chattanooga; daughter, Dana; grandson, Grant; former wife, Martha Jan Smith; daughter, Jennifer; former wife, Patricia Venable; children, Virgil Ed, Jeffrey and Michelle; three grandchildren; and one sister, Marie Elliott.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, Oct. 17, at 5 p.m. at the Anglican Church of the Redeemer on McCallie Avenue in Chattanooga, TN
The family requests that memorial donations may be made to The Anglican Church of the Redeemer, 1200 Mountain Creek Road #170, Chattanooga Tenn.
