William E. “Willie” Houston Jr., 71, of Ypsilanti, Mich. and formerly of Spring City, died Wednesday, July 3, 2013 in Detroit, Mich.
Beloved brother, father, uncle and friend to many. William Edward Houston Jr. was born on Oct. 15, 1941 at Chamberlain Memorial Hospital in Rockwood, Tenn. He was the firstborn son of the late William E. Houston Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Headspeth Houston. His formal education finished at Carver High School in Dayton in 1960.
Shortly after graduation, he joined the United States Armed Forces in 1961, where he served six years and spent time in Europe. Upon his return to the United States, he decided to reside in Detroit, Mich. Detroit offered many job opportunities of which he took advantage. He worked in steel industry for over 20 years.
William married Narvena Stokes Houston and had two sons, Tracy and Mark. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends; entertaining, cooking and fishing were his favorite hobbies. Much to his dismay, he was preceded in death by his wife and firstborn son, Tracy.
During the latter part of his life, he resided at Cross Street Village in Ypsilanti, Mich. He leaves behind to cherish his memory a son, Mark (Lisa) Houston of Dayton; five grandchildren; brothers, James (Ruth) Houston of Knoxville, Robert (Mary) Houston of Mt. Juliet, Tenn. and Theodore “Mascot” Houston, Detroit, Mich. and a host of nieces, nephews and myriad of friends.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 10, at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Vaughn Funeral Home with Rev. Luther Hollingsworth officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in Petersburg Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 10, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home.
