Gary Douglas Goodwin, 66, of Dayton, died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013 at Parkridge Hospital.
Gary was a graduate of Chattanooga High School and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He was retired from Bechtel after 13 years of service. He travelled worldwide as a senior planner project controls specialist in nuclear, fossil and other industrial plants. Gary was born in Athens, Tenn. on Feb. 2, 1947, and was raised in Chattanooga. He was a sergeant (E-5) in the U.S. Army serving three years in Vietnam. He received the Purple Heart, two unit citations and other medals and commendation while he served.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence Ivan and Sara Gertrude Boyd Goodwin.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda Goodwin of Dayton; two daughters, Sarah Goodwin Newton of Roswell, Ga. and Shalon Goodwin (Brian) Bull of Palm Beach Fla.; one son, Gary Douglas Goodwin Jr. (Veronica) of Jacksonville, Fla.; three stepchildren, Chasta Brooks (Brian) Christopher, Eric (Kari) Brooks and Bryan Brooks; one sister, Patricia Goodwin, Hyler (John) of Chattanooga, Tenn.; three brothers, Marion Mitchell Goodwin of Chattanooga, Tenn., David Paul Goodwin (Kathy) of Granbury, Texas and Christopher Boyd Goodwin (Nancy) of Spring City; 14 grandchildren; and several beloved nieces, nephews and their children.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, Oct. 27, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Coulter Garrison Funeral Home with Pastor Stanley Faulkner. Burial will be at Riceville Cemetery in Riceville, Tenn.
The family will receive friends Saturday, Oct. 26, from 6 to 9 p.m.
